On the heels of Ronald Como’s retirement from the Penn Hills police chief position, municipal officials have appointed an acting police chief.

Officer Jason Bonace was called upon for the position.

“Penn Hills has the largest municipal police force outside of the city of Pittsburgh. We have the largest municipality with over 40,000 residents and close to 30 neighborhoods,” Mayor Pauline Calabrese said during the Aug. 18 council meeting. “We are very grateful for our public safety, and we thank each and every one of the officers for their service.”

According to Calabrese, Bonace was unanimously appointed by council members.

“It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the acting chief of police for the Penn Hills Police Department. Our community deserves a department that leads with integrity, professionalism and compassion — and I am committed to upholding those values each day,” Bonace said in a statement. “The men and women of this department work tirelessly to protect and serve Penn Hills, and I am proud to lead alongside them as we continue building trust and strengthening our connection with the community.”

Bonace, 47, has served as an officer with the department since July 2005. He also is a trained K-9 officer.

“I want to sincerely thank Mayor Calabrese, the members of council and the Penn Hills administration for the opportunity to serve in this role,” Bonace said. “Your support means a great deal, and I look forward to continuing our shared commitment to the safety and well-being of all who call Penn Hills home.”
