People who were in a vehicle being followed by an unmarked state drug task force vehicle stopped and exchanged gunfire with authorities Monday afternoon in Stowe, then fled and shot at another law enforcement vehicle, police said.

Agents with the state Attorney General Narcotics Task force were following the vehicle around 1:45 p.m. on Lower Benwood Avenue when it stopped, its occupants exited and shot at the authorities’ vehicle. No one was hurt, but a state agent and a McKees Rocks police officer who is also member of the task force returned fire.

Another state agent in another unmarked vehicle chased the vehicle out of the neighborhood onto Tunnel Way, Island Avenue, Chartiers Avenue, and West Carson Street.

Police said people in the suspect’s vehicle fired multiple rounds at the second agent’s car. The suspect’s vehicle was later recovered in Pittsburgh’s Mt. Washington neighborhood. No injuries were reported.

Sto-Rox Junior-Senior High School was put on lockdown as a result of the incident.

Descriptions of the suspects were not released.

Allegheny County police are investigating.
