Looking to help “ease people back into work style,” the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership has created three outdoor workspaces at its Allegheny Overlook temporary park on Fort Duquesne Boulevard.

“The idea for the Allegheny Overlook was to create a space that would welcome people back Downtown as we turn the corner on the pandemic,” said Jack Dougherty, director of special events at PDP. “The workspaces specifically are a way to cater to the Downtown office population.”

Designs for the workspaces came from Workscape, an office furniture company based in Pittsburgh. The workspaces feature dividers for privacy, with pergolas overhead to protect visitors from the weather.

The three workspaces are named “Saarinen,” “Bertoia” and “Florence,” after the influential designers Eero Saarinen, Harry Bertoia and Florence Knoll. All three were inspirations for Workscape and Knoll Furniture.

The Saarinen and Florence spaces both feature white tables with matching benches, while Bertoia has individual blue chairs with yellow round tables in between, all provided by Knoll Furniture. There are also multiple food vendors through the park to accommodate a quick lunch for workers.

Allegheny Overlook, which opened in late June, closed one direction of vehicle traffic on Fort Duquesne Boulevard from Seventh Street to Stanwix. Through the summer, it is hosting musical artists and themed events.

Dougherty said that the PDP intends to keep the workspaces open through the duration of the Allegheny Overlook, which will be closed in mid-September.

They are free to reserve anytime for groups of up to 12 people on Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The link to the booking website can be found here.

“We’ve received a good number of bookings so far and we’re excited about the enthusiastic response,” Dougherty said.
