Summer reading fun coming to Northland Public Library in McCandless

Northland Public Library’s Read, Renew, Repeat summer reading program runs from June 1 through July 31, for youngsters through age 18.

Sign up to register at northlandlibrary.readsquared.com. Log the books you read to become eligible for prizes. Stop in the library at 300 Cumberland Road, McCandless, for games, activities and, of course, books.

Bookshelf Bingo

The library’s adult summer reading challenge, Bookshelf Bingo, begins soon. Every book you read between June 1 and August 31 qualifies you for a chance to win a $25 Target or Trader Joe’s gift card every two weeks, plus one of two grand prizes at the end of the summer.

Register starting June 1 at northlandlibrary.readsquared.com.

Bookmark contest

Children of all ages and adults can enter their original artwork in Northland’s Summer Bookmark Contest. Pick up an entry form in the Children and Teen Services or at the Ask A Librarian desk beginning June 1, or download one from the Children and Teen page on the library’s website.

Follow the guidelines to enter your design, which will be judged in age categories 0 to 5, 6 to 9, 10 to 12, 13 to 17 and 18-plus. Bring your entry to the Children and Teen Services desk by June 29.

Summer hours

Beginning May 26, the library will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. It is closed Sunday and on May 27 for Memorial Day.

Adult programs

• Food: A Cultural Culinary History, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays. Join staff members to watch lectures from the Great Courses class series, covering how human civilization has been shaped by our interaction with food.

Topics are Hunting, “Gathering and Stone Age Cooking” and “What Early Agriculturalists Ate,” June 4; “the Alexandrian Exchange” and “the Four Humors and International Gothic Cuisine,” June 11; “Eating in the Early Industrial Revolution” and “First Restaurants, Chefs and Gastronomy,” June 18; and “Immigrant Cuisines and Ethnic Restaurants” and “Science of New Dishes and New Organisms,” June 25.

• Travel to Italy, 6 p.m. June 13. Join Lorenzo Dellagiovanna from T&L Global as he guides you through Italy’s rich history, arts, culture and traditional lifestyle, while providing you with everything you need to know to organize the trip of your dreams.

A Milan native, Lorenzo will share some of the best places to visit and teach some useful Italian phrases like how to order at a restaurant, ask for directions and communicate with a taxi driver. Registration is required for the program at bit.ly/NLItaly.

• Northland NerdCon, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 15. The library’s third annual event celebrates comics, anime, board games, role playing, and all things nerdy. Come up with a great costume for the cosplay contest. Compete to see if you’re the best Mario Kart racer, or spend some time playing games with fellow participants.

• Craft night: tie-dye, 6 p.m. June 17 in the library’s Learning Garden. Join staff members to make a tie-dye shirt or bag, or feel free to bring something of your own to dye (no blankets, towels, or larger items).

Registration is $5 for the program. Sign up starting June 1 at the Ask A Librarian desk on the second floor of the library.

Children, ’tweens and teens

• Stuffy story time, 6 p.m. June 25. Children ages 4 to 6 are invited to bring their stuffed animals for a story time, after which registered animals will have a sleepover at the library. Owners will pick up their stuffed animals the following day. Registration is required, and space is limited.

• Preschool story time, 11 a.m. June 27. Preschool children and their families are invited to the Learning Garden Pavilion for a story time featuring books by Mo Willems. No registration is required.

• After-Hours Murder Mystery, 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 28. Participants ages 12 to 18 are invited to take on the persona of murder suspects. Registration is required.

Ongoing programs

• Nonfiction at Northland, 6:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month, an informal discussion of current nonfiction books on a wide variety of topics.

The June 4 book is “I’m Glad My Mom Died” by Jennette McCurdy. Contact colemank2@northlandlibrary.org to join the group’s email list.

• Movie matinee, 1:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month. Peek into the sights and culture of other lands through a travel or foreign film feature. No registration is required.

The June 19 film is “Persian Lessons.”

• Decaf Tea and Stitches, 6 to 8 p.m. the third Thursday of each month. Whether you enjoy knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, embroidery or something in between, work on your project while chatting with other crafters.

Tea and snacks will be provided. No registrationis required. All experience levels are welcome. Email colemank2@northlandlibrary.org if you’re interested in joining.
