Award winning writer Jerry Spinelli will be reading and signing his latest book “My Fourth of July” during a picnic-style event from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverstone Books in McCandless.

Spinelli is a Newbery Medal winner whose books include “Maniac Magee,” “Wringer” and “Stargirl.”

The June 2 event will include picnic foods such as sliders, hot dogs, kettle chips and more supplied by the nearby LongHorn Steakhouse.

There also will be a pike bake-off contest that will be guest judged by Spinelli and his wife Eileen, who also is an award-winning children’s author.

Participants are invited to bring their best pie to the event and put them up against pies baked by the store’s owner and employees.

People planning to attend the free event are asked to RSVP so enough food can be ordered.

Riverstone Books is located in the McCandless Crossing shopping center.
