Featured programs for adults

• Great Courses: Sacred Texts of the World, 10 a.m. Tuesdays in March. Join library staff members in watching lectures from the Sacred Texts series and then discussing them.

The schedule is March 5, Hinduism and the Vedas and Sikh Scriptures; March 12, Prophets and Writings, and Apocrypha and the Dead Sea Scrolls; March 19, Zoroastrian Scriptures and Jain Scriptures; March 26, Shinto and Tenrikyo, and Islam and Scriptural Recitations.

Registration is required for each week. Coffee and snacks will be provided.

• Genealogy Lock-In, 6:30 to 10 p.m. March 22. Northland Public Library and the North Hills Genealogists are teaming up for an evening of hands-on research. Participants require general computer skills to search for ancestors using online databases, including Ancestry Library Edition, MyHeritage, Family Search and American Ancestors.

Participants should bring a flash drive to save copies of documents and information that may be found. Registration is required.

• Local Author Fair, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 23. Celebrate the talented authors living around and writing about Pittsburgh. Participants can purchase books, chat with authors, and attend author talks and panels.

Programs for children, tweens and teens

• Family Music Class, 6 to 6:30 p.m. March 7. Tracie Bradshaw of Sound Beginnings will lead families with children up to 4 years old in musical fun through songs, rhymes, movement and musical play. Registration is required.

• Middle School Mayhem: Photography Level 1, 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 27. Fundamental photography information is provided, including the safe handling of photography equipment, managing lighting and shadows, composing your best shot, using the environment and color expressions in photos, and choosing a point of view.

Don’t have a camera? Bring your cellphone.

The program is presented in cooperation with 4H, and registration is required.

Ongoing adult programs

• Tea and Stitches, 10 a.m. to noon the first Friday of each month, including March 1 and April 5.

Whether you enjoy knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, embroidery or something in between, join the group to work on your project while chatting with other crafters. Tea and snacks will be provided. No registration is required.

All experience levels are welcome. Email colemank2@northlandlibrary.org if you’re interested in joining.

• Cookbook Club, 6 to 8 p.m. the first Monday of each month.

Home cooks of any skill level can explore dishes from various cookbooks. You may make a dish related to the month’s theme to bring to share: March 4, Noodles, and April 1, Copycat Recipes.

• Next Chapter Book Club, 10 a.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, including March 12 and 26.

The club provides meaningful opportunities for lifelong learning, social connections and community inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The library provide the books, and readers of any level are welcome to join to read aloud and discuss the stories. Email akenheadl3@northlandlibrary.org for more information.

Ongoing children, teen programs

• Middle School Writing Group, 6 to 7:30 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month, including March 6.

Students in fifth through eighth grades who enjoy creative writing meet for writing games, group writing exercises and interesting prompts. Bring your notebook or laptop for unstructured time to start a new project or continue working on an old one, and to share your work.

• Toddler Times, 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. Wednesdays.

A short and sweet nursery rhyme time is provided for children ages 12 through 35 months with a parent or caregiver. No registration is required.

• Lab Mice, 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Mondays. These STEAM-based program includes reading a story, talking about what happened and doing a hands-on STEAM activity based on the book. This program of science, technology, engineering, art and math exploration is for children ages 3 to 6.

Free trees for kids

Parents can register their children to receive a free tree from Neighborhood Forest. Register online at www.neighborhoodforest.org/parent-registration/?school=19084 through March 15.

A seedling pickup event is scheduled for 2 to 3 p.m. April 28, featuring live music and nature activities. No registration is required for the event.

‘Gatsby in the Garden’

Celebrate spring at Northland Public Library on April 20.

The Garden Gala 2024: “Gatsby in the Garden,” presented by UPMC Health Plan and UPMC Passavant, will feature food offerings from local restaurants and caterers, along with tastes of spirits, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages.

Guests can enjoy live music, a silent auction and mingling with friends upstairs, downstairs and outside in the Learning Garden beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $125 for VIP and $75 for regular admission. Visit www.northlandlibrary.org/foundation/garden-gala.
