North Hills student news: Scholarships, musical involvement and more

CCAC student awarded scholarship

Community College of Allegheny County student Melinda McCloskey, of Wexford, has been named a 2021 Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar and will receive a $1,000 scholarship. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion. McCloskey attended North Hills High School.

“I am honored to receive this scholarship and am forever grateful for the outstanding support of the amazing people of CCAC and PTK (Phi Theta Kappa),” said McCloskey, who will graduate in May and will begin classes in the fall at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Upon completing her education, she plans to concentrate her efforts on helping to grow her father’s contracting business, with a vision to deliver quality service, empower the community and inspire leading sustainability practices in the remodeling industry.

North Hills students perform in Seton Hill musicals

Seton Hill’s Department of Theatre and Dance presented streamed recorded performances of the music of Goldrich and Heisler in two parts, “I Believe in Love” and “Make Your Own Party.” The student cast of “I Believe in Love” included Hannah Taylor of Wexford. The student cast of “Make Your Own Party” included Alexandra Hellingerof Allison Park.

Carson Scholarship winner

The Carson Scholarship Fund based in Towson, Md., announced its 2021 Carson Scholars, which “recognizes and rewards students in grades 4 to 11 who embrace high levels of academic achievement and community service.”

The organization is awarding $1,000 scholarships to 688 first-time scholars and 831 “recognized scholars” who have received the honor multiple times.

North Hills Carson Scholars include:

New Carson Scholars

• Providence Heights Alpha School: Clara Yuo, 8th grade.

Recognized Carson Scholar

• North Allegheny High School: Tanya Gupta, 11th grade, three-time winner; Kara Mihm, 12th grade, four-time winner.

• North Catholic High School: James Orlando, 9th grade, two-time winner; Luke Phillips, 11th grade, three-time winner; Alice Sommers, ninth-grade, two-time winner.

Academic achievements

The following students from the area were recognized for their academic achievement during the fall 2020 semester by being named to the dean’s, president’s or provost’s list at the college or university they attend:

• Dickinson College: Ben Brandeis, Anna Dougan-Bacha

• St. Lawrnce University: Emily Anderson

• University of Pittsburgh, Bradford: Andrew J. Bokulich and Joshua M. Palko

• Canisius College: Nadia Durante

• University of Connecticut: Yibo Zhang
