Virtual foliage tour, Halloween parade

McCandless is using a new website it created to host fall activities that can’t be conducted in person because of the coronavirus.

Residents are invited to photograph the most striking foliage in the town and submit it for display on the McCandless and Me website.

A poll will be conducted to select one of the photos for the 2021 official town calendar.

Residents also can participate in the virtual costume parade by uploading photos of families dressed in their favorite Halloween attire. Participants will be able to comment and vote on their picks for the best costumes.

McCandless hosting virtual Turkey Bingo

McCandless’ decision to host a virtual bingo this summer because of the pandemic was so popular that it’s happening again.

A virtual Turkey Bingo is set from 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 12. There is no cost to sign up, but space is limited to 145 players. The deadline to register is Nov. 6.

The games will played on the Zoom meeting app. Players will receive two cards by email. Prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Salem church hosting Trunk-or-Treat

Salem United Methodist Church is holding a Trunk-or-Treat event on Halloween.

Families are invited to bring their kids dressed in costume to collect treats in the church parking lot.

The event is scheduled from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 31.

The church is at 350 Manor Road in Wexford. For details, send an email to Community Life@Salem-umc.org.

Franklin Park brush chipping set for Nov. 2

Fall brush chipping In Franklin Park will take place on Monday, Nov. 2.

Residents must place brush to the curb by 7 a.m. to have it chipped. The chipper is scheduled to pass through the borough only once, but it may take several days to make the rounds.

Brush and tree trimming must be 4 inches or smaller in diameter and placed at the curb with the butt end facing out. Thorn bushes will not be accepted, and trees must be disposed of by a private contractor.

Residents also can obtain a permit to dispose of brush at the yard waste drop off along Blaine’s Way in Blueberry Hill Park. Permits can be obtained at the municipal building or by applying online.

Honor Society plans Thanksgiving food drive

The National Honor Society at North Hills High School and the Class of 2021 are teaming up to host the annual Thanksgiving food drive to help families in the district who are in need.

Food will be collected from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16 at North Hills Christian Church, 778 Thompson Run Road.

Items needed for the food drive include stuffing, canned vegetables, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, “take and bake” bread, canned fruit, juice and baked goods mixes.

Cash or checks also can be donated by dropping them off or mailing them to: North Hills Christian Church, c/o Family Food Bags, 778 Thompson Run Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237.

Trick-or-treating

Trick-or-treat in McCandless, Ross, Franklin Park, Marshall, West View and Bradford Woods will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

Residents who plan to hand out treats are asked to keep their porch lights on. People opting out should leave their homes darkened.
