McCandless police hosting National Night Out

The McCandless police department is planning a full night of family fun to mark the annual National Night Out on Aug. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Town Hall.

Children are encouraged to dress up in their favorite first responder costume and bring their bicycles and helmets to participate in a free bike rodeo.

There also will be free hot dogs, giveaways and raffles along with a live broadcast by Bob FM.

The night will cap off with movies in the park hosted by the McCandless Community Association.

Residents who can’t attend the event are asked to turn on their porch lights and spend the evening with neighbors.

Town Hall is located at 9955 Grubbs Road.

Outdoor movie night

North Hills Hockey Club is teaming up with Ross Township Parks & Recreation to host a Movie Night Under the Stars. The Aug. 7 event at the Ross Community Center is free, but donations will be accepted to benefit the hockey club. Live music will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the film “The Mighty Ducks” at about 8:30 p.m. The concession stand will be open, and there will be a 50/50 raffle.

Blood drive

The Town of McCandless is partnering with the American Red Cross to host a blood drive for residents of the town and neighboring municipalities.

The drive will be held on July 29 from 1 to 6 p.m. in the Community Room at the Wexford Volunteer Fire Co., 228 North Chapel Drive.

Sign up online to donate blood or call 1-800-733-2767 to schedule an appointment.

Worship service at Hartwood Acres

Elfinwild, Parkwood and Hampton Presbyterian churches will come together July 25 to host a combined worship service outdoors at the Hartwood Acres Park Amphitheatre.

The service will be led by the pastors of the participating churches with the bands of all three churches contributing music. Anyone in the North Hills who wishes to worship is invited to attend. Bring blankets and chairs. The praise band will present a 30-minute concert after the one-hour service.

The Amphitheatre is located at 4070 Middle Road in Allison Park.

Members are encouraged to donate to their individual churches as usual; however, any monies collected that day will be donated to the North Hills Community Outreach (HEARTH) and Anchorpoint.

For details or questions, call any of the three church offices: Elfinwild U.P., 412-486-5400, Dirk Lesnett; Parkwood U.P., 412-486-9220, Jeffrey Potter; or Hampton P.C., 724-443-3201, Ted Martin.

Storytelling at Bradford Woods Reserve

On July 30 at 7 p.m., gather at the reserve in Bradford Woods at the corner of Lincoln and Bradford Road, where you can walk down the trail to a beautiful outdoor area around the campfire to listen to people telling short stories.

Bring a blanket to sit on the grass or a chair and a flashlight. There is no parking at the reserve, so attendees will have to park and walk in. After the storytelling, s’mores will be made.

This event is sponsored by the Bradford Woods Conservancy and is free.

North Allegheny School District’s Kennywood Day is Aug. 14. Tickets can be purchased all summer in the athletic department, at North Allegheny High School. For more information, call 724-934-7238.
