Get ready for Love Your Library Month at Northland

Keep an eye out in September as Northland Public Library celebrates Love Your Library Month.
The library will have several ways to engage with patrons show your support through a variety of fundraisers and events.
Featured programs at the library, 300 Cumberland Road, McCandless, include:
For adults
• Author Talk, 6 p.m. Aug. 8. McCandless author Brian Colella will speak about how his experience in aviation and firefighting helped him write his first book, “Out of the Fire.” Registration is required.
• Craft Night: Crochet Coasters, 6 p.m. Aug. 19. Learn basic crochet stitches and start your own coaster. No experience is necessary, but some familiarity with crochet would be helpful. Registration is $5. You can sign up starting Aug. 1 at the Ask A Librarian desk on the second floor of the library.
• Coasters and Corn Dogs, 7 p.m. Aug. 26. What happened to amusement parks like Alameda, Luna and West View disappear, and how do the survivors, such as Kennywood and Idlewild, remain relevant in the modern world? Join Steve Cicero to hear about amusement parks and how they have changed over the years.
Registration is required for this virtual program. A Zoom link will be emailed the week beforehand.
Children, ’tweens and teens
• End of Summer Event, 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 2 in the grassy area of the upper parking lot. All those who participated in the library’s summer reading program, “Read, Renew, Repeat,” are invited to attend an event that features a petting zoo, ice pops and some surprises. No registration is required.
• Summer Chess Tournament, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 3. Chess players in kindergarten through eighth grade can compete for trophies in two divisions: K-4 or 5-8 . Each player will play four time-limited rounds. Touch-move rule. Initial pairings will be by grade level.
Please note this is not for absolute beginners and is not limited to children in the library’s chess club. Registration is required, and space is limited.
• Mother Goose Tummy Time, 10 a.m. Aug. 20. Babies ages 3 to 12 months and a caregiver are invited to a 20-minute story time, followed by instruction from a physical therapist on how to help your baby in his or her current stage of development. Then enjoy some time to socialize. Registration is required.
Ongoing programs: adults
• Booked for Lunch, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. the second Friday of each month, a fiction book discussion group. Email colemank2@northlandlibrary.org to join the group’s email list.
“The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida” by Shehan Karunatilaka is scheduled for Aug. 9.
• Mystery Lovers Book Group, 6:30 p.m. the third Thursday of each month. “Eight Perfect Murders” by Peter Swanson is scheduled for discussion on Aug. 15
• Video Game Test Drive, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month ages 12 and older can test a video game released on the Nintendo Switch within the past year. No registration is required.
Ongoing programs: youngsters
• Middle School Writing Group, 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, an information group for students in fifth through eighth grades who enjoy creative writing.
• Northland Kids Chess Club, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of most months, including Aug. 21. Join the club to gain game experience, solve chess puzzles and develop habits of good sportsmanship. Players must already know how to play the game. No registration is required.
• Teen Dungeons & Dragons, 3:30 p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month. Everything for kids ages 12 to 18 to get started playing will be provided. No experience is necessary, and no registration is required.
