The local chapter of the American Heart Association will mark national “Wear Red Day” on Feb. 1 with activities at The Block Northway to help raise awareness of the fight against heart disease and stroke in women.

Radio personality Melanie Taylor of 100.7 Star radio will be on hand to kick off the “Go Red For Women” initiative at 11 a.m. in the upper level of the shopping center’s South Corridor.

Staff from UPMC Passavant hospital will provide free blood pressure screenings and share heart healthy tips, games, prizes and more to “encourage women to take charge of their heart health and understand the risk for cardiovascular diseases and stroke,” said Frank Licata, president of LRC Realty, which owns and operates the mall.

The event runs until 1:30 p.m.

The Heart Association reports that cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women and that heart disease and stroke cause nearly 1-in-3 deaths among women each year.

An estimated 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events can be prevented with education and lifestyle modifications, according to the non-profit organization.

The shopping center is at 8013 McKnight Road in Ross Township.
