Award winning writer Jerry Spinelli was on hand to sign copies of latest book “My Fourth of July” during a picnic-style event at Riverstone Books in McCandless on Sunday.

Spinelli is a Newbery Medal winner whose books include “Maniac Magee,” “Wringer” and “Stargirl.”

The June 2 event included picnic foods such as sliders, hot dogs, kettle chips and more supplied by the nearby LongHorn Steakhouse.

There also was a pike bake-off contest judged by Spinelli and his wife Eileen, who also is an award-winning children’s author.

Riverstone Books is located in the McCandless Crossing shopping center.
