Cheers to your furry friends.

Scottish craft brewer BrewDog has teamed locally with Animal Friends in Ohio Township as well as Gigi’s Shelter Services in Ohio to showcase adoptable dogs looking for forever homes.

The brewery created Street Dog and Street Dog AF (alcohol free), beers of its Punk IPA and Punk AF. The drinks are available online-only in 6-packs or 24-packs for pre-order through Sept. 18.

The collaboration was inspired by Ricky Gervais, comedian and advocate for homeless canines. He posted on Twitter that “Dogs make me happy. Beer makes me happy. A beer that saves dogs makes me VERY happy.”

BrewDog saw the post and first launched the beers in the United Kingdom for local animal charities there and extended that reach in the U.S. last week. The craft brewer opened a location in East Liberty in February.

Wednesday is a perfect day to place an order because it’s National Dog Day, even though this collaboration isn’t aligned with it according to BrewDog. The cans will give space on the label for profiles of dogs in the care of Animal Friends and Gigi’s Shelter Services.

Proceeds will be split between the charities.

BrewDog co-founder James Watt said in a statement that the company is always looking for ways to help.

“When Ricky tweeted us with a genuine endorsement for Punk IPA, we wanted to use our platform to donate to a cause he’s passionate about,” Watt said. “We then decided to take it one step further and not only donate the profits from our Street Dog cans but give our pawsome four-legged friends at these local shelters space on our cans to help them find forever homes.”

This is a unique project as a way to bring awareness to adoption and other programs, said Kathleen Beaver, president and CEO, of Animal Friends in a statement.

“We know that so many of our neighbors are struggling during these difficult times – not just people, but their pets too – and we hope that this initiative will lift spirits and brighten someone’s day,” she said. “Simply put, we know that this campaign will not only raise awareness, but it will save lives.”

Many shelters can only find adopters for one out of every 10 dogs, said Justin McKinniss, community engagement, Gigi’s Shelter Services in a statement.

“With BrewDog’s support, Gigi’s will continue providing free vaccines, veterinary care and adoption center placement to make sure they’re happy, healthy and find a new home,” McKinniss said.
