6th annual golf outing in honor of Pine-Richland senior who died raises $22K for charity

An annual golf outing in honor of a Pine-Richland senior who died in 2013 just weeks before graduation raised nearly $22,000 that will be donated for scholarships and other worthy causes, organizers announced.
The 6th annual Matt Graf Golf Outing held June 4 at the Pittsburgh North Golf Club in Gibsonia drew 144 golfers and other supporters. The event, which included a dinner catered by Walnut Grill in Wexford, was a sellout.
Graf, who was 18 when he died, planned to continue his baseball career at the University of Pittsburgh’s Greensburg campus. Graf lettered in baseball and wrestling at Pine-Richland and was on the high school golf team for three years.
Michael Young, who helps organize the golf outings, said the annual event was created as a way to honor Graf and allow the family to give back to the community “that had been so kind to them” following the teen’s death.
Young said the golf outing became “an instant hit” and has sold out each year since its debut in 2015.
Graf’s mother, Katie Graf, quoted American poet Maya Angelou when asked about the kindness and generosity demonstrated by members of the community.
“I have learned people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel,” she said.
This year’s outing brings the total raised for charity by the annual events to nearly $94,000.
The outing was sponsored by the Hampson family, Pasquinelli Insurance Agency and Red Oak Branded Solutions.
