We’ve made it to the weekend. If you aren’t attending Picklesburgh or the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix in Schenley Park, here are some other things to do.

Edible garden

The fifth annual Swissvale Edible Garden Tour is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The free event showcases gardeners growing food throughout the borough.

The gardens include spaces of all different stages of development and gardening styles. This event is hosted by Swissvale Area Gardening Enthusiasts.

Guests can pick up a map of locations at the Swissvale Farmers Market located at the Dickson Preparatory Steam Academy, 7301 Schoyer Ave., and begin the self-guided tour.

After the tour, there will be a picnic at the farmers market from 2:30-5 p.m. There will be a carrot cake competition. Participants can bring their own carrot cake to be judged as well as visit the “bouquet bar” where people can create flower arrangements to take home.

Proceeds from the event will support the farmers market.

Home brew

The second annual Pennsylvania Homebrew Invitational is from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday at Necromancer Brewing in Ross. The event, which will be hosted at multiple breweries throughout Pennsylvania, will crown the best home brewer in the state. Home brewers will be asked to bring one beer for official judging.

There are five regions and the top three in each region will compete for the championship at Floating Feathers Brewing in Mill Hall, Pa. Guests will be able to sample beer made by the home brewers.

The overall winner earns $2,000 and will have their winning recipe brewed commercially by Chatty Monks Brewing. There will also be a People’s Choice winner.

Tickets for each event are $35.

Dance Africa

Dance Africa Pittsburgh is happening on Saturday and Sunday at New Hazlett Theater on the North Side. Hosted by the Legacy Art Project, this annual celebration presents youth and adult performances that reflect the beauty of the African diaspora through song, dance, drumming, visual art and spoken word.

There will be music and performances of West Africa. The event is at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday. A free Africana marketplace will be in the courtyard outside the theater and will have traditional and contemporary African arts, crafts and merchandise.

Tickets start at $24, $19 for seniors and youth.

Rugby

Pittsburgh Steeltoes Rugby Club will host Premier Rugby Sevens Eastern Conference Finals at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Highmark Stadium on the South Side. Tournaments include a series of eight, 14-minute games, rotating between the men’s and women’s competitions. Teams competing include New York Locals, Pittsburgh Steeltoes, Southern Headliners and Texas Team.

Premier Rugby Sevens is a professional sports league in North America that debuted in 2021. The league showcases the sport of rugby sevens through a touring format in cities across the U.S..

There will be bands, disc jockeys, games, and contests.

Pittsburgh Steeltoes Rugby Club will host Premier Rugby Sevens Eastern Conference Finals at 3 p.m. on July 23 at Highmark Stadium on the South Side.  

Violins of Hope

Violins of Hope Pittsburgh is hosting an instrument collection to help youth musicians. People can donate string, woodwind and brass instruments that will be restored and presented to musicians at a concert in honor of World Kindness Day. The first collection will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the Calvary Episcopal Church parking lot at 315 Shady Ave. in East Liberty.

The concert will be on Nov. 19 at Heinz Hall, Downtown, with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Junior Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.

A donation from The Farina Foundation will help pay to clean, repair or restore instruments. The foundation was established to continue the legacy of Frank J. Farina Jr., former chairman of the North Allegheny music department. Violins of Hope Greater Pittsburgh functions under the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh.
