The Allegheny County Sheriff’s Department is conducting an investigation after a deputy shot a dog in North Braddock Monday night.
A family’s 5-year-old pit bull was shot once in its right hip, TribLive news partner WTAE reported.
The sheriff’s department told the station that the deputy was serving legal process on a property before the shooting.
“An Allegheny County deputy sheriff discharged their weapon, striking a dog that had left an enclosed area on an adjacent property,” a spokesperson with the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Sheriff Kraus is in the process of reviewing the events leading up to the discharge of the weapon.”
The dog’s owner believes the pit bull, named Pretty, jumped a fence to eat cat food the neighbors put out for stray felines.
The family took the dog home Monday night against a veterinarian’s advice.
The owner said she is not able to pay for a procedure to find if the dog has internal injuries.
