Carnage and comedy befall the student cast of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street! School Edition,” this year’s spring musical at North Allegheny Senior High School.

The adaptation of the Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 28- 29 and March 1- 2, along with a 2 p.m. show on March 3. There also will be a4:30 p.m. performance on Feb. 27 for Gold Card/Senior Citizen holders and North Allegheny staff members.

All shows will be held at the high school auditorium, 10375 Perry Highway in McCandless. Tickets cost $14 via www.namusical.com.

The story features a “resourceful pie shop owner and a vengeful barber out for blood,” according to a show description on the NA ticket website.

The title character is being played by senior Sam Lopuszynski.

“I think this show is great because it has such a dark plot, but there is also so much humor in it,” said Lopuszynski, who lives in McCandless. “Audience members will really get to experience a variety of themes in this show, such as fear, humor, revenge and so much more. The music in this show is also so alluring, with repeating themes and wonderful melodies throughout.”

Fellow senior Amanda Campos plays baker and Todd accomplice Mrs. Lovett.

“‘Sweeney Todd’ is so unique to musical theater. It has captivating music, twists and turns, and dark yet funny characters that will captivate any audience,” said Campos, a Franklin Park resident.

“Personally, my favorite song is ‘A Little Priest,’ where Sam and I truly get to explore the characters of Sweeney and Lovett working together. Doing this show has taught me so much about myself, others, and my love for theater. One of the best experiences of my high school career,” she said.

Other cast members include Evan Wilson as Anthony, Grace Durzo as Johanna, Ben Truesdell as Judge Turpin, Ryder Boles as Beadle Bamford, Arjun Puri as Tobias, Reilly Spitz as Beggar Woman and Andy Georgiev as Pirelli.
