New Allegheny County covid-19 cases tie 14-day low
Allegheny County reported 42 new covid-19 cases Tuesday, according to the county Health Department.
The new case count ties a 14-day low, with 42 new coronavirus cases being reported Monday and Tuesday.
No new coronavirus-related deaths and 25 new hospitalizations were reported.
Total cases are now 11,821, and the hospitalization total is now 1,183. The death total remains at 373, where it has been since Saturday.
In Allegheny County, there are currently 43 covid-19 patients hospitalized, with nine of them on ventilators.
Tuesday’s new reported cases, seven of which are probable, came from 608 PCR tests, ranging from Aug. 25-Sept. 21. The majority of tests came between Sept. 15-Sept. 21, the health department said. The amount of tests administered for Tuesday’s reported cases is the lowest since Sept. 8 when 480 tests were given.
PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests are the most common covid-19 tests and look for virus’ genetic material in the nose, throat or other areas of the respiratory tract to determine whether a person has an active infection. This is opposed to serology tests that look for antibodies the body produces to fight SARS-CoV-2, which indicates a person has had a past infection.
Ages of new cases range from 3 months to 98, with a median age of 25.
