Murrysville council this week will consider lending its support for a petition to redistrict municipal voting precincts.

Long voting lines during the past two elections have caught municipal officials’ attention, and they are looking at working with the county to make some changes.

All seven of Murrysville’s precincts contain more than the state-recommended maximum of 1,200 voters. Some, like East Murrysville and Manordale, are only a couple hundred voters over. However the Sardis and Newlonsburg precincts both exceed 3,600, well beyond the figures allowable “without good cause shown,” according to state law.

A resolution supporting the petition is on council’s Jan. 16 agenda.

Countywide, 15 percent of Westmoreland voting precincts exceed the state’s recommendations.

Other items on council’s agenda include:

• Approval of a five-year agreement with the Murrysville police officers union.

• An ordinance granting West Penn Power an easement through Murrysville Community Park for installation of a transformer and underground electrical conduit.

• Presenting the 2018 Outstanding Achievement Award to municipal IT specialist Michael Hiler.
