Salvation Army seeking bell-ringing volunteers

The Salvation Army’s Delmont Service Center is seeking volunteers to perform bell-ringing duty during one-hour shifts between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.

Volunteers are needed for shifts on Nov. 18, 24 and 25, and Dec. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22 and 23.

Red Kettles for donations will be stationed at the Walmart on Hollywood Boulevard.

‘Monticello Lights’ set for December

Residents in Delmont’s Monticello neighborhood will host their annual “Monticello Lights” fundraiser Dec 9 and 10 to benefit the Salvation Army & WTAE’s Project Bundle Up and the Delmont Recreation Committee.

It will take place from 6-9 p.m. both nights. Visitors can “vote” for their favorite decorating scheme by donating at the box in front of each house. Proceeds will be split between the two charities.

‘A Patriotic Thanksgiving’ concert

The Murrysville Cantata Choir will host its annual concert, “A Patriotic Thanksgiving,” at 4 p.m. Nov. 19.

The concert will be at First Presbyterian Church, 3202 North Hills Road in Murrysville. There is no cost to attend, but donations are welcome.

Upcoming Westmoreland Conservancy events

The Westmoreland Conservancy will host the following events:

• Opt-Outside Black Friday hike, will take place at 10 a.m. Nov. 24, leaving from the Murrysville municipal building, 4100 Sardis Rd., and traveling the Don Harrison Community Trail, a 5-mile walk extending from the Townsend Park ball fields to the Walter Reserve on Wiestertown Road. The hike will stop at the Caywood lot on Hills Church Road (1.75 miles from the start) and the Walter Reserve lot on Wiestertown Road (4.25 miles from start). Hikers are advised to carpool and leave a vehicle at their chosen destination and the municipal lot.

• Tomer Hot Chocolate Hike, will take place at 10 a.m. Dec. 16, leaving from the Tomer Reserve; parking is at the northern end of Twin Oaks Drive. The hike will focus on overwintering birds and will conclude with hot chocolate back at the parking lot.

• Winter solstice walk, will take place at 4 p.m. at the Morosini Reserve, Morosini Farm Court in Murrysville. Enjoy a hike during the shortest day and longest night of the year, with sunset at 4:55 p.m.

• First Day hike, will be at 11 a.m. Jan. 1 at the Caywood Reserve on Hills Church Road in Murrysville.

AAUW used book sale

The Murrysville American Association of University Women will host a three-day used book sale Nov. 9-11 at the Murrysville Community Library.

Sale hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 9-10, and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 11.

The library is at 4130 Sardis Road in Murrysville.

Upcoming library programs

The Murrysville Community Library will host the following upcoming programs:

• Medicare information sessions will take place at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 and 30. Sessions will take place at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 6 and 21. The sessions will be hosted by Charles DeAngelis of Bankers Life. No registration is required and the sessions are free to attend.

• Houseplants 101, will take place at 6 p.m. Nov. 13 for teens and adults. The program will cover different plant families, the level of care they need and which are safe for inquisitive pets. It will include a re-potting demonstration.

• Musical Matinee, will take place at 2 p.m. Nov. 15, part of the library’s monthly series showing classic musicals. November will feature a musical from the 1950s. Refreshments will be served.

• Pressing and Drying Flowers, will take place at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 16. Instructor Bonnie Isaac, botany collection manager at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, will demonstrate how to press, dry and preserve flowers.

• Financial Aid Night, will take place at 6 p.m. Nov. 20 with representatives from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency discussing higher education costs and how to apply for the types of financial aid that are available.

• After School Art will take place at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 27, for children in grades 1-6. The topic will be artist Claude Monet and participants will paint a water lily pond.

Drag queen bingo

The Italian-American Club in Export will host “Legendary Queens of Drag Bingo” on Nov. 11.

It will be at 7 p.m. at the club, 5930 Kennedy Avenue in Export. Doors open at 5 p.m. and tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Tickets include food (baked ziti, salad, roll and cake) and eight regular games. Specials are $3 each or two for $5. There will be a cash bar, and the event is for those 21 and older.

Bingo in Harrison City

St. Barbara Parish in Penn Township’s Harrison City neighborhood will host its monthly bingo at 6:45 p.m. Nov. 8 at the church, 111 Raymaley Road.

Doors open at 5 p.m. Payouts are $100, $150 and $1,400. Admission is $27 and extra packages are $5. Early-birds, “quickies,” all-nighter, 50/50 and games of chance are also available.

Woman’s club schedules annual Christmas Tea

The Murrysville Woman’s Club will host its annual Christmas Tea fundraiser at noon Nov. 18 at the Lamplighter Restaurant.

The event includes a silent auction for a wide variety of gift baskets.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased from club members or by calling 412-760-5809.

Foundation seeking grant applications

The Community Foundation of Murrysville, Export and Delmont is accepting applications through Dec. 15 for grants to nonprofit organizations in all three towns.

Grants in the range of several hundred dollars will be awarded to groups demonstrating a need for small sums to make a significant, long-term impact on the local community.

‘Paint and Play’ at Newlonsburg church

Newlonsburg Presbyterian Church will host a Nov. 9 “Paint and Play” event for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will include open gym time and a pottery painting activity led by Brushes and Beans Cafe.

Participants are asked to bring a bag lunch. Dessert will be provided.

Curbside leaf collection set

Murrysville residents can schedule a curbside pick-up for leaves and yard waste on Nov. 18 and Dec. 9.

Forms to schedule a pick-up are available at Murrysville.com by clicking “About Us” and then “Forms, Permits & Maps.” There is a 20-bag limit for each collection. The deadline to sign up is the Thursday prior to pick-up.
