Upcoming Murrysville library events

• March 23: Children’s chess tournament at 9:30 a.m. The competition will have two divisions, grades 1-4 and grades 5-8. First- and second-place winners will advance to the county competition on April 13.

Participants are asked to arrive at 9 a.m. and bring a chess set. Register by calling 724-327-1102.

• April 6: Peter Rabbit will visit the library at 11 a.m. Ann Troxell from the Beatrix Potter Society will read “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” and share some rabbit-related coloring activities and treats. Geared toward preschool students, but all children are welcome to attend. Register by calling 724-327-1102.

Chili cook-off in Delmont

The Delmont Recreation Committee will host a March 24 chili cook-off competition at the Kepple Pavilion in Newhouse Park off Stotler Road.

There is no cost to attend the event. Participants will vote by donating to their favorite chili. All proceeds will go toward recreation committee summer event programming.

• The Delmont Public Library announced new Saturday hours. The library will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

• The library will host a fishing basics class at 3 p.m. March 23. Learn how to purchase a fishing license and obtain basic fishing gear. Participants are asked to bring a notebook and pen. Register at DelmontLibrary.org.

Franklin Regional band to host breakfast fundraiser

The Franklin Regional Panther Band will host a March 16 pancake breakfast fundraiser in Murrysville.

It will be from 8-11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 3916 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville.

Tickets are $10 plus a $1.50 processing fee, and are available at Franklin-Regional-Band-Boosters.ticketleap.com. Proceeds will benefit the band’s general fund.

Curbside leaf pickup in Murrysville

Murrysville will host a spring leaf collection on April 27. There is a 20-bag limit, and the deadline to sign up is the Thursday prior to the pick-up date.

Murrysville Clean-Up Week

Murrysville will host its annual clean-up week April 15-19 between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m., and April 20 from 7-11 a.m.

Residents can take items to the Valley Landfill on Pleasant Valley Road. Permits are available at the front office at the Murrysville municipal building at 4100 Sardis Road.

Boundaries program

The Murrysville Community Library will host a March 26 program, “Boundaries 101: Why? How?” at 6 p.m. with licensed professional counselor Andrew King.

King will discuss a definitive and concise idea on how to set healthy boundaries in one’s life and their importance.

Symphony East

Symphony East will kick off its 62nd season March 18 with musicians from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Violinists Regi Papa, violist Marylene Gingras-Roy and cellist Mikhail Istomin will perform at 1 p.m. A $10 donation is requested for adults who attend.

It will take place at the Lamplighter, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem.

Woman’s club events

• The Murrysville Woman’s Club will host its annual spring fashion show at 10 a.m. March 23.

It will be at the Lamplighter Restaurant, 6566 William Penn Highway in Salem. It will be a breakfast buffet followed by the fashion show, hosted by Marge Predmore.

There will be raffle basket chances for sale. Proceeds will benefit the club’s community projects. Tickets are $30, and are available by calling 412-760-5809.

• The club is also offering at least three non-traditional, $3,000 scholarships for women from Westmoreland County, 21 and older, who are currently enrolled in college or can provide proof of acceptance.

The club has awarded scholarships for four decades to women seeking education and job training.

Applications are available at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Westmoreland County Community College campuses in Youngwood and Murrysville, and the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, along with the Murrysville, Delmont, Greensburg, Hempfield and New Kensington libraries.

The application deadline is April 20.
