A couple is charged in connection with the overdose death of their toddler last month in their Munhall apartment where police said they found thousands of empty stamp bags of suspected heroin and fentanyl, according to the charges against them.
Robert Kraft, 39, and Paige Hufnagel, 28, are both charged with homicide.
Police said they responded to the couple’s apartment on Margaret Street around 1:30 a.m. May 12 for a report of an unresponsive toddler, later identified as 2-year-old Robert Kraft. He died about 12 hours later, and police said toxicology results showed he died from a fentanyl overdose.
Investigators wrote in the complaint that when they arrived at the apartment, they found it in “extremely deplorable condition” with used heroin stamp bags throughout.
Two other children, a 4-year-old and 7-year-old, were also living in the home. The younger child told officers who first arrived at the scene that “Robbie’s dead, he drank this little thingy,” and made a small circle with his thumb and index finger, according to the complaint.
“He drank it and he is dead,” police said the child told them, unprompted. Police said the child later tested positive for fentanyl in his system.
Investigators said they found empty stamp bags on the floor near toys and throughout the home. The stamp bags were “too numerous to count but estimated to be in the thousands,” according to the complaint.
Kraft told officers he has battled addiction for several years and keeps the empty stamp bags in order to ingest the residue, investigators wrote. Asked if he thought the child could have gotten a hold of the bags or other paraphernalia, Kraft said “he thought that but was hoping it wasn’t the case,” the complaint said.
He said the entire family had been asleep in the living room where they all usually sleep when the 4-year-old woke him up saying that “Robbie wouldn’t wake up,” according to the complaint. Kraft said he screamed for Hufnagel to call 911, which she did as he attempted to revive the child, the complaint said.
Investigators wrote that Hufnagel told them she is in recovery and has been on methadone for four years. She said she knew Kraft used drugs and kept paraphernalia in the house, the complaint said.
Both were taken into custody Thursday, according to police.
In addition to homicide, both are charged with three counts each of child endangerment and reckless endangerment. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for July 8.
