Utility-related scams on the rise

Attorney General Dave Sunday is warning Pennsylvanians to be cautious when contacting their utility providers as utility-related scams to obtain personal information are on the rise.

“We are hearing of increases in impersonation scams involving utility providers. As always, I encourage Pennsylvanians to be vigilant and cautious online and anytime they are solicited,” Sunday said in a statement Wednesday.

The scam involves fake websites that look like and appear to be a legitimate utility provider’s. The fake websites show up in Google searches and when a customer clicks onto the site, scammers are able to pose as employees and make claims that payment is past due.

Scammers then frighten the target into turning over personal information or making payment.

Another version of the scam involves false phone numbers that customers call to make payments, but the phone line is actually a way for scammers to obtain information.

“Consumers should be wary when someone asks for your personal or banking information over the phone — especially during an unexpected incoming call. Scammers aim to frighten and pressure their targets, so if you have such an experience, cease communications immediately,” Sunday said.

The PA Office of Attorney General advises people who are unsure whether they are communicating with a legitimate representative of their utility company, hang up the phone and call the number listed on their bill.

Oakmont Bakery pays tribute to Mike Tomlin

Departing Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is getting a sweet honor from Oakmont Bakery. On Wednesday, the shop announced a new addition to their menu: a Mike Tomlin tribute cookie.

Tomlin said Tuesday that he is stepping down as the team’s longtime head coach.

The bakery dropped the news of their tribute Wednesday on social media, showing black and gold portrait cookies featuring a photo of Tomlin decked out in Steelers gear with the words “Thank you, Coach Tomlin” underneath.

“A true leader and Pittsburgh legend,” the bakery said on the social media post. “Thank you for the years, the grit and the standard.”

Tomlin, whose career with the team lasted nearly two decades, made the announcement of his departure following the Steelers’ playoff loss to the Texans on Monday night.
