2 injured in shooting in East Hills

Pittsburgh police said a teen was taken to the hospital from the scene of a shooting Monday night in Pittsburgh’s East Hills neighborhood.

Police said they were called to the 2000 block of Fairlawn Street at Sunrise Avenue around 5 p.m.

A 17-year-old boy was found on the 1900 block of Fairlawn with multiple gunshot wounds to his thighs and buttocks, police said. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian in stable condition.

A crime scene was found at the intersection of Fairlawn and Sunrise, police said.

A short time later, police said, a male in his mid-20s arrived by private vehicle at UPMC St. Margaret Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg. Police said he was in stable condition and uncooperative with officers, but the initial investigation indicated his injuries were connected to the shooting.

Police are investigating.

1 injured in West End shooting

Pittsburgh police said they are investigating after a man was found early Sunday morning with a gunshot wound near a 7-Eleven in the city’s Chateau neighborhood.

Officers were called to the 1000 block of Western Avenue for reports of a man shot at 3 a.m. The man was found in the parking lot beside the store.

He told police he had been shot in his left hand and was in the process of trying to drive himself to a hospital.

Police say the man told them he had been shot in the West End.

After investigating, police found a possible crime scene at the 100 block of Hunt Street in the city’s Sheraden neighborhood. At that location, police said they took a shell casing in as evidence.

The injured man was reported to be in stable condition.

SWAT situation in Central Oakland

Just after 1 a.m. Monday morning, Pittsburgh police said they were dispatched to the 300 block of Atwood Street for a welfare check of a heavily intoxicated man with a handgun.

Police said officers attempted to make contact with the man, identified as Bruce Straka, 36, without success and began to evacuate people from nearby apartments. During this time, police said the man fired a round within his residence.

The man called 911 to say the firearm discharge was accidental, but police said he proceeded to make statements threatening harm to himself, police and others.

A SWAT callout was initiated when Straka refused to come out of his apartment. Police said he continued firing interior rounds and directed the shots toward officers out of an exterior window for several hours.

He surrendered without further incident at 7:22 a.m. He was taken into custody and transported to the Allegheny County Jail.

Straka is charged with terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person.
