2 men shot in Knoxville

Two men were shot Thursday night in an apartment building in Pittsburgh’s Knoxville neighborhood, according to city police.

At 8:45 p.m., Pittsburgh police, fire and EMS responded to the 100 block of Knox Avenue for reports of shots fired inside the building, said police spokeswoman Cara Cruz.

Officers found a man with a gunshot wound to his torso on nearby Charles Street, Cruz said, and medics took him to the hospital in stable condition. He was downgraded to critical condition and taken into surgery, Cruz said.

Another man, who had a gunshot wound to the chest, was driven to an urgent care center in Brentwood, Cruz said. Pittsburgh EMS took him to a Pittsburgh hospital in stable condition.

No arrests have been made. Police continue to investigate.

Woman arrested after shots fired in Beltzhoover

Pittsburgh police on Thursday arrested Alasa Jones, 28, of Pittsburgh in connection to an incident of shots fired early Thursday morning in the city’s Beltzhoover neighborhood.

Cruz said police responded to the 300 block of Rochelle Street at 12:50 a.m. for someone asking to file a domestic report and protection from abuse order.

A woman told police she was shot at by a woman she knew while sitting in her car near her ex-boyfriend’s house in the 500 block of Boggston Avenue, Cruz said.

No one was injured. The victim’s 4-year-old daughter was in the backseat at the time of the incident, Cruz said. The vehicle was damaged from the bullets.

Officers obtained video of the incident, Cruz said. Police recognized the location and Jones from a call they investigated 10 minutes earlier on Boggston Avenue.

Jones is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.

Request to reopen Duquesne City high school denied

The Pennsylvania Department of Education has denied a request from the Duquesne City School District to reopen its high school, the district announced.

District administrators were notified of the decision Thursday, according to the announcement.

“Duquesne’s administrative team was deeply saddened to learn about the rejection,” the statement read. “The department gave one reason for the application denial: that to operate a high school program, the district would require long-term revenue commitments that its current financial status would not be able to support.”

The district operates one building for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Duquesne closed its high school in 2007. High school students in the district either attend West Mifflin or East Allegheny high schools.
