A Gateway High School student received $500 for her winning emblem design for the municipality’s new Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System, or MS4, fund.

Councilman Ron Harvey, the chair of the municipality’s MS4 committee, said 13 students from the high school’s art department participated in a competition to design the program’s emblem.
“We talked to all the kids and educated them about MS4,” Harvey said. “We told them about other communities that have done this around the country to get them ideas of what others have done. We just told them not to duplicate the other emblems.”
Council approved an ordinance in October that allows the municipality to fee property owners annually to fund flood control projects. The fund is expected to raise $3.2 million this year.
Council members Greg Erosenko and Eric Poach served as judges, along with two Gateway teachers.
