St. Paul’s Meals on Wheels will offer new members a free meal on Mother’s Day – May 12 – when they purchase a week’s worth of meals for $25.
The group delivers to about 50 elderly residents of Pitcairn, Wall, Wilmerding, Trafford, Level Green and parts of Monroeville. About 700,000 meals have been delivered since the program started in 1971.
Volunteers — former members of the now-defunct St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Pitcairn — deliver a hot meal consisting of a meat, starch and vegetable, and a cold meal that includes a sandwich, bread, salad, fruit, dessert and milk.
Dan Casey, St. Paul’s Meals on Wheels coordinator, said the number of people enrolled in the program has declined, partly due to a Medicare program that offers free meal-delivery services to those who qualify.
But St. Paul’s Meals on Wheels provides clients with more than a meal, he said.
“What’s nice about it is our volunteers develop relationships with these people,” said Casey, adding that the food provided by Meals on Wheels is prepared daily.
