A Monroeville native serving with a U.S. Navy security force credits her family support with helping her succeed in a career in the military.

“I love seeing how my family feels about me serving in the Navy,” Petty Officer First Class Melinda Moore said in a Navy community outreach article. “I am the first person in my family to serve in the military and that distinction does make me proud.”

Moore, a 2010 Gateway graduate, is serving with the Maritime Expeditionary Security Force which helps protect Navy ships, submarines and aircraft carriers. Members of the force provide security in ports, harbors, on waterways and ashore, and for specific assets, according to the Navy.

The squadron to which Moore is assigned is responsible for protecting maritime platforms and port infrastructure.

She has been with the Navy for 10 years and serves as a career counselor. She is hoping to graduate in 2026 with a bachelor’s degree in human resource management from the University of Maryland.

Moore credited support from her husband, their two daughters, parents and grandparents as being key to keeping her motivated.

“I always wanted to join the military,” she said. “I joined the Navy because of the job opportunities and the benefits. I love what I do.”
