A Monroeville-based Meals on Wheels volunteer group got an early Christmas gift to help its efforts through the holiday season.
The East Suburban Meals on Wheels received $500 from the Westinghouse Service Uniting Retired Employees (SURE) program in October. The volunteer group was one of 17 organizations in the region to receive a financial donation through the program.
“This really helps us,” said Bob Seidelson, organizer for the East Suburban Meals on Wheels. He said the group tries to give its 50 clients free meals throughout the month of December.
Every other month, clients pay $5 per day, which gets them a hot and cold meal Monday through Friday.
Seidelson, a 75-year-old retiree of Westinghouse, said the East Suburban Meals on Wheels has been operating for around 30 years and gets its food from Forbes Hospital’s kitchen.
Westinghouse SURE, a retiree group, donated $11,400 to 10 food pantries and seven meals on wheels programs throughout the region. Some of the recipients included West Hills Food Pantry, Norwin Area Meals on Wheels, We Care Food Pantry in Wilkinsburg and Pitcairn Community Food Pantry.
Each group that received a donation has Westinghouse SURE members.
“It’s something we enjoy doing,” said Susie Barbour, a Westinghouse SURE spokeswoman. “There are folks out there who struggle during the holidays so we want to lend a helping hand when we can.”
