Gateway senior receives full 4-year scholarship to Saint Vincent College
A Gateway High School student received a four-year, full-ride academic scholarship to Saint Vincent College after being chosen as the winner of a competitive written exam with the school.
Tadeusz Horomanski was one of 155 high school students who participated in the Wimmer Scholarship Exam in November.
The students who participated needed to have a minimum 3.25 GPA and scores of at least 1170 on the SAT or 24 on the ACT. Only five students were awarded the 39-year-old scholarship, which was named in honor of Saint Vincent College founder Archabbot Boniface Wimmer.
His scholarship is valued at $145,000, according to a St. Vincent news release.
Other top winners included a home-schooled student from Lewisburg and two students from Hempfield Area High School.
Horomanski declined to comment, saying through a St. Vincent spokesman he’d rather stay out of the spotlight.
But his gifted coordinator at Gateway High School, Lynn Martin, did not hesitate to rain accolades on her student. She was not surprised he won the scholarship.
“I’ve been teaching for 24 years and he’s one of the best students that I’ve seen,” Martin said. “His work ethic is of the highest standard. He takes the highest level courses and almost all the advanced placement courses offered. And he performs at the top of his class.”
Martin is not sure whether Horomanski will accept the scholarship, as he is awaiting answers from applications sent out to other schools.
“He’s very personable and humble,” Martin said.
The senior also stays very busy, she said. Horomanski has participated in the high school’s marching band for four years and numerous clubs such as the Rotary’s Interact Club, the Science Discovery Club, and Junior Classical League – to name a few.
Martin said Horomanski is also an Eagle Scout and patrol leader in his local Boy Scouts troop. He has also participated in several programs to advance his knowledge of math and science such as participating in the Science Bowl, CalcuSolve, the PA Math League and others.
“He does a lot,” she said. “I can’t say enough about him … he’s a fantastic kid.
