A fitness and health enthusiast from Marshall Township is hosting online “fireside chats” focused on health and wellness beginning Feb. 5 with a “Conversation with Dr. Sanjay Gupta.”
The informal chat takes place from 2 to 3:15 p.m. on Facebook Live through goodtobefit.com, according to the site’s founder Pradeep Fulay. Gupta will offer tips on a range of issues, including weight and fat loss, high blood pressure, and heart-related and cognitive-related issues in the context of physical activity and nutrition.
Gupta is a board-certified internal medicine physician in Weirton, W.Va. He did his residency at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to Fulay.
Fulay, who lives in Marshall Township with his wife Jyotsna, is a program director with the National Science Foundation. But his passion is fitness and health. He is a personal trainer certified by the American Council for Exercise. In his spare time, he teaches swimming to adults and conducts strength training classes online. He founded goodtobefit.com to promote community wellness.
“In general, (I’m) very passionate about community health and wellness, especially from a prevention perspective,” said Fulay, who has participated in 10 marathons and several triathlons.
Fulay said his guests are not compensated, but volunteer to offer health-related, friendly advice that someone might want to discuss with their own doctor.
A Feb. 19 chat will feature cardiologist Dr. Indu Poornima, who is the director of preventive cardiology and women’s heart center at Allegheny General Hospital. She will discuss heart health and nutrition.
“Several chronic diseases that we battle these days can be traced back to poor nutrition. The great strides made in human longevity may be declining due to rising rates of obesity and associated chronic diseases including high blood pressure, diabetes and even cancer,” said Poornima, a resident in Marshall Township.
“We need to look at food as medicine and this concept is the bedrock of cardiovascular prevention. It’s never too early to embrace this concept as poor nutrition during teen years increases the rates of obesity and cardiac diseases later in life,” she said.
A chat on March 5 will focus on dental and oral health with Dr. Mayura Ginde, a general dentist in Pittsburgh.
Fulay’s wife Jyotsna has a doctorate in biochemistry and works at the University of Pittsburgh in financial information services. Their son Suyash and daughter Aarohee are NA graduates. Suyash is completing his doctorate at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Aarohee, who has a doctorate in public health, just joined the University of Pittsburgh as a postdoctoral fellow, Fulay said.
The fireside chats scheduled are from 2 to 3:15 p.m., followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer period.
