A man was critically injured early Wednesday in an accidental fire in his apartment in Pittsburgh’s Carrick neighborhood, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety officials.

Firefighters were called to an apartment building in the 2600 block of Churchview Avenue just after 1 a.m. for reports of smoke throughout the building.

Once inside, city firefighters found heavy smoke coming from one apartment, where they found a man on the ground and a recliner on fire, said Public Safety spokeswoman Cara Cruz.

Crews removed the man from the building and took him to the hospital in critical condition, she said.

The fire was contained to the one apartment, but seven others sustained minor smoke and moderate water damage, according to Cruz. A woman was evaluated for smoke inhalation, but was not taken to the hospital.

The cause is believed to be accidental, Cruz said.
