Kavan Markwood, the man who fell over the right field wall at PNC Park last week, took his first steps on Monday, according to an online fundraiser update posted by his girlfriend’s mother, Jennifer Phillips.

The update, posted at 4:45 p.m. Monday by Phillips, said Markwood being up and moving is a “huge win and definitely lifted everyone’s spirits.”

Phillips’ daughter, Alonna, is Markwood’s girlfriend.

Markwood, 20, had been listed in critical condition after falling 21 feet from the Clemente Wall in the park’s right field during the Pirates’ game against the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday.

“He still has a long way to go — he’s dealing with a broken neck, clavicle and back so there are plenty of obstacles ahead,” Phillips wrote. “But he’s showing real strength, and we’re staying hopeful for a smooth recovery. This will also require plenty of rest and following instructions from the great doctors, nurses and staff at the hospital.”

Phillips thanked people for their love and support. The GoFundMe has raised more than $41,000 as of Monday evening.
