The intersection of Penn Avenue and Sixth Street in Downtown Pittsburgh will be closed today through early June.
The intersection, with Heinz Hall at one corner, will be closed to allow the city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure to replace broken and sunken brick crosswalks at the site. The crosswalks will be replaced with stamped, colored concrete sidewalks meant to emulate brick.
During the work, Penn Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic from Seventh Street to Fifth Avenue.
DOMI suggested several detours for drivers in the area.
As an inbound Penn Avenue detour, city officials recommend turning left on Seventh Street, right on Liberty Avenue, right on Stanwix Street and right on Fort Duquesne Boulevard.
As a Sixth Street detour, they suggested turning from Fort Duquesne Boulevard right onto Seventh Street, and then right onto Liberty Avenue.
For those who park at the parking garage at 542 Penn Ave., DOMI suggested drivers come from Liberty Avenue, turn right on Fifth Avenue and then right onto Penn Avenue, where a counterflow lane will be maintained to allow drivers to access the garage.
Bicyclists using the Penn Avenue cycle track will need to get off of their bikes at the intersection of Sixth Street and walk along the sidewalk, city officials said. Once cyclists are out of the work zone, they can resume biking on the cycle track.
At least one sidewalk and crosswalk will remain open for pedestrians throughout the project.
The work will not impact the Port Authority of Allegheny County, city officials said.
The closure is expected to last till June 3, according to city officials.
Frank J. Zottola Construction, Inc. is performing the work for a cost of $254,000.
