Homewood man dies after being rescued from fire

A Homewood man died after being pulled from his burning apartment early Monday, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded at 3:40 a.m. to a blaze in the 500 block of Clawson Street and found flames shooting from the second story, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety spokesman Maurice Matthews.

Firefighters were able to rescue the man from the second floor, but he was taken to a local hospital where he died. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Clyde Alexander Demus, 56.

Crews knocked down the fire by about 4 a.m. The cause of the incident in under investigation.

Matthews said the Red Cross will help any displaced apartment residents.
