Elks dinner benefits shipping items to Ukraine
The Pittsburgh South Hills Elks Lodge is hosting a fundraising dinner from noon to 7 p.m.
Tickets are $15 and include a pasta dinner and dessert. Proceeds from the dinner will offset the cost of shipping donated items to Ukraine.
Purchase tickets from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the lodge, or mail checks to the lodge at 2789 South Park Road, Bethel Park, Pa. 15102.

Shade Tree Commission plans Millennium Park planting
The Bethel Park Shade Tree Commission will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree-planting event at 10 a.m. April 29 at Millennium Park, funded by the Rotary Club of Upper St. Clair – Bethel Park (Breakfast) and the municipality.
Trees to be planted include: three Dura Heat Clump River Birch, three Autumn Blaze Red Maples, two Celebration Red Maples and four Forest Pansy Redbuds (1.75-2 in.).
“We’ll also have people there checking on trees we planted last fall, mulching around them, and planting flowers around the park’s entrance sign,” Tim Moury, Bethel Park Council president, said.
Millennium Park is located at 5900 Baptist Road.
Treehaven Garden Club holds plant sale
Treehaven Garden Club’s annual plant sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon May 7 at the South Park Shops, 5209 Library Road, Bethel Park.
Club members will be selling homegrown perennials, herbs and house plants at reasonable prices. Also, hanging baskets from Lenik Greenhouse will be available.
Golf permits available for South Park course
Allegheny County’s South Park Golf Course is open for the season after undergoing annual maintenance and aerating. Daily operating hours are 6 a.m. to dusk, with regular-season fees in effect.
Senior golf permits for ages 60 and older for the 2022-23 season are available for purchase online or in person from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday at the South Park clubhouse. The cost is $80 for county residents and $100 for non-residents.
Disabled American veterans with identification cards may purchase golf permits in person at the clubhouse. The cost is $80 for residents and $100 for non-residents.
Golfers are encouraged to visit www.alleghenycounty.us/golf to review the youth golfer and spectator policy, rates for 9-hole and 18-hole play, and more.
Library recognized for literacy programming
Bethel Park Public Library is among the 2022 first quarter PA Forward Star Library awardees, showcasing libraries that are committed to providing quality literacy programming to their communities.
PA Forward, established by the Pennsylvania Library Association in 2012, works through five key literacies – basic, information, civic and Social, health, and financial – to assist individuals in enhancing their overall quality of life.
In 2017, the association kicked off the Star Library program statewide to offer support to libraries that participate and integrate PA Forward’s literacies in their programming activities. Program topics can include information such as retirement planning (financial literacy) to more physically active programs such as walking book club discussions (civic and social literacy and health literacy).
Bethel Park earned the program’s Gold Star in maintaining previous similar awards.
Westminster Church offers fitness classes
Summer fitness classes are scheduled at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road, Upper St. Cair.
Offerings include:
• Cardio strength fusion, 8 to 9 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 6:45-7:45 p.m. Mondays.
• Cardio kickboxing, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mondays.
• Zumba, 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Saturdays.
• Flow (Vinyasa) yoga, 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays.
