Hampton High School junior Kai Suyama and sophomore Andrew Kaehly placed first in the Upper Division Scenes in Pittsburgh Public Theater’s 28th annual Shakespeare Monologue & Scene Contest.

Kai and Andrew performed a scene from “Two Gentlemen of Verona.”

More than 400 area students from 60-plus schools competed in the preliminary rounds of the contest. Participants submitted video performances of monologues and/or scenes they had chosen from the works of William Shakespeare.

Teams of judges evaluated each participant. Students in eighth through 12th grades competed in the Upper Division, and those in fourth through seventh grades in the Lower Division. The Showcase of Finalists was held Feb. 28 at the O’Reilly Theater in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Hampton Middle School students Jasmine White, sixth grade, and Andrew Craig, eighth grade, were recognized with honorable mentions in the contest.
