Details of the funeral and procession Tuesday for fallen McKeesport police Officer Sean Sluganski have been announced.

Sluganski, 32, of McKeesport was killed in the line of duty Monday, Feb. 6 while responding to a mental health/domestic incident in the city.

He and his partner, Chuck Thomas Jr., 35, were attempting to reach Johnathan Jermia Morris, 31, that afternoon.

According to police, Morris shot both officers as he was walking away from his home, along the 1300 block of Grandview Avenue. Sluganski was killed and Thomas.

The suspect was shot a few blocks later after he opened fire on another McKeesport police officer, who was not injured.

Both Thomas and Morris have been released from the hospital.

Thomas on Wednesday attended a vigil held in Sluganski’s memory.

Morris was taken to the Allegheny County Jail for arraignment on a variety of charges including homicide and aggravated assault.

County police, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office and state police are handling McKeesport calls and patrols while the department mourns.

Visitation, funeral arrangements

Visitation is noon to 8 p.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at John F. Slater Funeral Home, 4201 Brownsville Road in Brentwood.

Due to the volume of people expected, the public has been asked to park at Benson Lincoln Mercury on Route 51. Shuttles will bring visitors to the funeral home for visitation.

A Funeral Mass for Sluganski will be celebrated at noon Tuesday at St. Albert the Great Church in Baldwin.

The funeral is invitation-only and not open to the public.

Allegheny County spokeswoman Amie Downs said the funeral procession the cemetery and grave site ceremony will include only the family and the McKeesport Police Department, and the law enforcement escort.

McKeesport officials said those wishing to line city streets to pay their respects can do so starting around 2 p.m.

For residents who may want to pay their respects during the procession from the funeral home to Jefferson Memorial Cemetery, here is the route it will follow:

• Brownsville Road to Route 51 southbound, to Lebanon Church Road, and across the Mansfield Bridge.

• The procession will make a left onto West Fifth Avenue into McKeesport, and then a right onto Walnut Street.

• From there it will make a left onto Eden Park Boulevard, and then a left onto E. Fifth Avenue.

• The procession will return from McKeesport the way it came and will continue down Lebanon Church Road to Jefferson Memorial Cemetery.

A map of the city’s portion of the procession was posted to Mayor Michael Cherepko’s Facebook page.

According to his obituary, Sluganski was the fiance of Chelsea Cancilla and father of Haven Sluganski. He is also survived by his mother, Terri, two sisters, nieces, aunts, uncles and his dogs, Sigg and Knox.
