Sharpsburg officials hope to obtain a municipal intern to help plan the borough’s future.
They applied Feb. 15 to obtain a summer intern for the borough through the Local Government Academy, a nonprofit, non-partisan organization.
Borough Manager Christine DeRunk said the intern, if approved by the academy, would work on a five-year capital improvement plan.
The plan would help identify potential projects; ways to improve the borough, such through recreational initiatives, and identify items needing repair in the near future.
The intern would work June through August for up to 400 hours.
The academy would cover half the cost of the internship, which was listed at $12 per hour for graduate students and $11 per hour for undergrads.
The municipal intern program is supported by the state Department of Community & Economic Development, Allegheny County and the Redevelopment Authority of the County of Washington.
Councilman Jonathan Jaso said the intern could be a big help to the borough by offering recommendations to improve it and finding ways to implement them.
“We are going to apply for a full-blown study that looks into everything top to bottom,” Jaso said. “Once the report comes out, then we do the projects in order of priority and resources. And that intern helps us through the application and follow through. At least that’s the way I understand it.
“We have never used one before. We have never worked with the LGA before. … I am very excited to see what remedies and resources that they have to put us on the right track to ensure that the residents are served best with the use of their hard-earned tax dollars.”
DeRunk said Sharpsburg expects to receive word on its application by April 1.
