Dorseyville Middle School musicians came away from a weekend festival in Ohio with some top honors.

Seventh-grader Mia Costello won the Outstanding Instrumental Soloist Award at the Music in the Parks Festival held April 26-27 at King’s Island, near Cincinnati.

The teen violinist was selected from among the eight middle school and high school orchestras that competed over the weekend.

It is the first time a DMS student ever has earned the designation.

Costello is also the concertmaster for the DMS orchestras, which both took some of the top spots at the competition.

The school’s Philharmonic orchestra earned a “Superior” rating and won first-place overall. There are 48 students in the group.

The Sinfonia orchestra, which includes 17 students, also placed first in its division with a “Superior” rating.

The school’s Orchestra Director Jeff Bryer said the students are not only talented musicians but “remarkable young men and women.”

“They are great ambassadors of our district when we go and perform in various locations,” he said. “Their behavior, positive attitudes and respect earn them praise wherever we go.”
