Pittsburgh Police were able to safely evacuate residents from an East Liberty apartment building when an armed man threatened responding officers before barricading himself inside.

Officers from the city’s Zone 5 station were dispatched to the 600 block of Collins Street shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving a call about a “hostile and armed man” inside the building.

The Special Weapons and Tactics unit was called in when the man refused orders to come out of the building.

When officers at the scene were unable to make direct contact with the man to negotiate they used loudspeakers to try to convince him to surrender.

After those attempts failed, gas munitions were deployed until he came out.

The man, whose name was not released, was checked by emergency medical technicians before being transported to the Allegheny County Jail.
