Pittsburgh City Controller Michael Lamb on Monday announced he will run for Allegheny County executive next year.
“As county executive, we will have a county government that is transparent and accessible,” Lamb said.
He said he hopes to provide “county leadership that is committed to making Allegheny County work better for the people it serves.”
Lamb, of Mount Washington, has served as Pittsburgh’s controller since 2008 and has led efforts to increase transparency in city government. He has spoken in favor of measures to ensure local nonprofits pay their share despite their tax-exempt status and has fought against privatizing public assets.
“In addition to those issues for which I have been fighting, we must have a criminal justice system that keeps people safe while providing real opportunities for those who have made mistakes and not just putting our residents in facilities that are unhealthy and unsafe,” he said. “We need new partnerships with our numerous municipalities to ensure critical services are delivered effectively and we must ensure a fair property tax system that protects homeowners.”
Lamb announced in August that he would not seek reelection to his current post.
The current county executive, Rich Fitzgerald, took office in 2012. He is unable to run for the office again because county executives are limited to three consecutive terms.
Lamb, an attorney, received his juris doctorate from the Duquesne University School of Law. He also holds a master’s degree from Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelor’s degree from Penn State University. He is a graduate of the Local Government Academy.
