The Pittsburgh Penguins have recognized Chartiers Valley Middle School science teacher Scott Caplan as their September Most Valuable Teacher.

The award recognizes teachers that bring STEM to life in the classroom through the Penguins’ Future Goals-Hockey Scholar Program, which uses hockey simulations and modules to explore the real-life applications of fundamental STEM concepts in grades 4-8.

“I was surprised by the award. I utilize this program to have students learn about physical science and the science process as an addition to the current curriculum,” Caplan said. “I like how the modules are set up so that they are using the science process in a fun way that deals with realistic hockey situations. The students take a pretest, go through a lesson, complete an investigation, collect data, analyze the data, come up with conclusions, then take a posttest. It feels good to be recognized for something that I enjoy using and the students enjoy doing.”
