Carnegie leaders are working to improve traffic patterns and signaling at the intersection of Jefferson and West Main streets at the entrance to the borough’s downtown business district.
Traffic signals were put in at the intersection in 2010, and technology has improved since then, borough Manager Steve Beuter said.
The borough in 2018 received a $22,640 Green Light-Go grant from the state Department of Transportation. The borough will contribute $4,528.
The Jefferson Street Optimization Project will tackle a need for “infrastructure repairs, signage upgrades, and improved timing implementation,” according to a funding commitment letter from Beuter.
Borough leaders in the past have received comments that the light lasts too long, Beuter said.
The goal is to “improve functionality of the traffic patterns and signals” he said.
Borough council members on March 11 accepted a proposal for engineering services from Trans Associates Engineering Consultants Inc. in an amount not to exceed $8,300 for a traffic analysis and signal revisions of the intersection.
The traffic study will take between six and eight weeks to complete, Beuter told council members.
