North Allegheny Senior High School principal John Kreider is the new superintendent for the Carlynton School District.

School directors unanimously approved Kreider to be the district’s next leader at the board meeting Tuesday. Kreider will begin his duties on or before Feb. 7. He will remain at North Allegheny to help the school as it finds his replacement.

The new superintendent received a four-year contract with an annual salary of $150,000.

“Carlynton is an outstanding school district with a strong tradition of excellence,” Kreider said. “It’s a district built heavily on community values. The three boroughs form one big family, which to me is very attractive.”

Kreider was one of 24 candidates who applied for the superintendent position. Board President Jim Schriver said the district was fortunate to have a number of qualified candidates, which was whittled down to a couple “exceptional” finalists.

“He successfully led a very large school,” Schriver said. “He’s strong with curriculum, strong with initiating programs and strong with STEM and STEAM initiatives.”

Kreider was raised in Lancaster County and worked for the school district of Lancaster before moving to Pittsburgh in 2000.He worked as a math teacher in the North Hills School District and coached baseball and wrestling.

Kreider advanced to assistant principal and associate principal before becoming building principal at the junior high school. He was promoted to principal of North Hills Senior High School in 2010.

In 2015, Kreider joined North Allegheny as the senior high school principal. While at North Allegheny, he helped expand the College in High School program by partnering with local colleges and universities.

“What that did was expand the options for our students to engage in curriculum at the college level,” he said.

At North Hills, he helped build partnerships between students and local business entities, allowing students to experience their career ambitions in a real-world environment.

Acting Superintendent Joseph Dimperio will remain with the district to help Kreider transition into his new role. Dimperio was hired in September 2018 after former superintendent Gary Peiffer resigned to take the same position at Greensburg Salem.

After Kreider was officially hired by the board, Dimperio was the first to welcome the new district leader.

“You are officially a Cougar, not a Tiger,” Dimperio said, referring to the schools’ mascots.
