A $204,000 grant from the Allegheny County Conservation District will help fund a stormwater infrastructure project in Bradford Woods this summer.
Road work continues to be one of the larger expenses in the 2024 borough budget. The $1.432 million spending plan was adopted by Bradford Woods Council on Dec. 11 with no change in the real estate tax rate of 3.375 mills, according to Rusti Null, borough manager.
The roads category in the budget is $627,189, up from $417,762 in 2023.
“The primary reason for the roads budget increase from 2023 is a project to pave and improve stormwater infrastructure on Washington and West Harding roads,” Null said.
The total project cost is estimated to be $255,000. The grant, which was awarded in May, has a matching funds requirement of 20%, which is $51,000 that the Borough must contribute, according to Null.
“Work on this project will begin as early as February, and should be completed by the end of May,” she said.
Additional road expenses include $250,000 for other paving projects in the borough, which is in the process of determining which roads are considered top priority for 2024, Null said. Typically, council votes on the road paving project in early spring and construction begins in late summer.
While borough staff members monitor roads, Bradford Woods residents can contact the borough to report any problems.
“Generally, residents call the borough office to notify us of a road issue. Sometimes these can be resolved by patching,” Null said. “The borough has a 10-year plan for road maintenance, but current road conditions are also factored into the decision of which roads to pave each year.”
Other notable 2024 budget expenses include a new $5,000 contribution to the McCandless Franklin Park Ambulance Authority, which services Bradford Woods, and a $25,650 contribution to the Bradford Woods Volunteer Fire Company, the same as last year.
The borough is set to provide $243,638 to the Northern Regional Police Department, an approximate $2,000 increase from last year, according to the 2024 budget document.
