Pittsburgh officials said Monday that work is underway on a project aiming to improve pedestrian and vehicle safety at several intersections in the South Side Flats, South Side Slopes and Mount Oliver.
Upgrades include traffic and pedestrian signal improvements, curb extensions and installation of ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Work also will include new sidewalks in some areas, along with new pavement markings, new signs and improved streetlights, officials said.
Upgraded signals are planned at the following intersections:
- 18th and Sara streets.
- 18th and Jane streets.
- 18th and Mission streets.
- 18th Street and Arlington Avenue.
- Brownsville Road and Bausman Street.
An additional signal also will be added at 18th and Josephine streets.
The city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure is contracting with Ohio-based S.E.T. Inc. on the project. Work is expected to be completed by next May, officials said.
The $5.2 million project is fully funded by a federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant.
Construction will take place during the day. All vehicle and pedestrian traffic will be maintained throughout the respective work zones, officials said, and no major detours are expected. There will not be significant impacts to bus routes along 18th Street, officials said.
