West Mifflin police respond Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024, to a deadly shooting on Midway Drive in the Mon View Heights apartment complex.

Allegheny County Police are investigating a homicide at a West Mifflin housing complex that is already facing charges for operating as a public nuisance.

Police said 911 was first alerted a little after 10 p.m. Tuesday of shots fired near the 40 building in Mon View Heights. Emergency services found a man with multiple gunshot wounds.

Nathaniel Walker, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene. His county of residence was not secified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner. No arrests have been announced.

County homicide detectives have initiated an investigation.

The shooting comes one day after Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala filed charges against the property for operating as a public nuisance.

According to Allegheny County property records, Mon View Apts. LLC purchased the 326-unit Midway Drive property in December 2022 for $17 million.

Since then, the district attorney’s office said, the new owner has failed to rectify “despicable” and “dangerous” conditions and make the necessary improvements to pass inspection. Trash, boarded-up windows, potholes and sewage near a public bus stop were reportedly found during an in-person tour by members of the DA’s office.

Of 129 units inspected over the summer, 96 failed, according to the criminal complaint, TribLive previously reported.

According to West Mifflin police, the department has responded to 502 calls for service in the complex in the last six months.

Those included 31 domestic disputes, 12 shots fired calls and 24 welfare checks.

As a result, at least 62 arrests were made or warrants issued.
