Travel tip: Keep your car winter-ready with salt, shaving cream

City of Pittsburgh employees work to clear the roads of snow around the North Shore on Feb. 20, 2019.

Slow down, increase following distance, steer into a skid — everyone knows these winter driving rules.

Here are a few perhaps lesser-known tips from “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” for staying safe when you’re on the road in cold and snow:

• To prevent snow and ice from sticking, gently rub a small, moistened cloth bag of iodized salt on the outside of your windshield.

• To fog-proof the inside of your windshield and mirrors, spray them with shaving cream and wipe off with paper towels.

• Avoid driving if you have the flu — it can slow your reaction time significantly more than moderate alcohol intake.
