Slow down, increase following distance, steer into a skid — everyone knows these winter driving rules.

Here are a few perhaps lesser-known tips from “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” for staying safe when you’re on the road in cold and snow:

• To prevent snow and ice from sticking, gently rub a small, moistened cloth bag of iodized salt on the outside of your windshield.

• To fog-proof the inside of your windshield and mirrors, spray them with shaving cream and wipe off with paper towels.

• Avoid driving if you have the flu — it can slow your reaction time significantly more than moderate alcohol intake.
